| | Biography | In the younger days of the Armenian super GM, it took two tries to ‘infect’ him with the chess bug. The first, at age 5 failed, but the second at 9 took, and boy did it ever! I first heard the name Levon Aronian when I saw him in Euro Disney in 1996, winning the FIDE junior rapid under 14, although two years earlier he was the u/12 world champion. His successes were consistent and plentiful, and by age 16 he is a proud member of the strong Armenian Olympic team.
Two years later FIDE bestows him with the GM title, and Levon closes his teen years with winning the prestigious title of World Junior champion. Over time, he shows that he has the talent not only for regular chess but other variants of the game, when he does very well in ‘Fischer random’ and online takes a liking and shows domination in 1 minute chess, blitz and of course: bughouse!
All this must have helped his over-the-board chess, since the Armenian who is quite the active player in the European team leagues, nudged his ELO almost 80(!) points since mid 2004. Very recently he added another feather to his cap when he won the strong Karabakh International in fine style, with a cool 6/9, signaling his hunger and ambition for further success. | | Tournaments: | | |
