Biography of Zoltan Almasi

Country:HUN
Title:GM
(Current!?) Elo:2672

BiographyAn integral part of a strong Hungarian line of players, and the silver medal winning team of 2002, Zoltan has always been slightly overshadowed by the likes of Leko and J. Polgar. He might not have been noticed at a single digit age and glorified as his compatriots, but when you win the world under 20 junior championships at age 17, as he did in 1993, one knows we are dealing with an incredible talent.

A 5 time Hungarian champion, Zoltan has been a 2600+ player for well over a decade. A veteran of many closed and strong opens, some of which he won and placed high in, he also participated in a few of the FIDE knockouts, including the last one in Libya, where he made it to the 4th round where he was stopped by the eventual champ Kasimjanov.

Almasi is a dynamic and aggressive player, who exclusively plays 1.e4, often times with ambitious openings that lead to exciting games. He has shown to be very successful in Fischer Random (chess 960), winning the strong FiNet chess 960 open in 2004, ahead of many GM’s. In 2005 he was came close to winning the chess 960 championships finals, but lost a winning match against Svidler.
